Keeping track of your keys can be a difficult task. After all, our lives are busy, and to top it all off, many of us have many different keys for many different businesses, homes, or other locations. As Denver locksmiths, we understand this well: We help people on a daily basis who have lost keys, or locked them in their car or home in a moment of absentmindedness. Our work as locksmiths gives us insight into the best ways to organize your keys so that you can keep track of them all.
Tip One: Color-Coded Keys
One of the easiest ways to keep track of which key is which is to color-code them. Choose a color for each type of key. Here’s an example of what we mean:
- Blue: House Keys
- Green: Business Keys
- Yellow: Car Keys
- Red: Keys for Other People’s Homes
Color-coding keys can really help you keep track of your keys. And, it’s simple to do. You can purchase key cases at many stores. Or, for a more affordable option, you can paint the tops of your keys with fingernail polish!
Tip Two: Separate by Use
We all have keys we use on a daily basis. These are our car, house, and mail box keys. We also have keys we don’t use very often. These are keys we’ve obtain over the years from friends who asked us to house-site, or extra car keys we don’t need on our everyday keychain. Take a moment to sort through your keys, and separate them out by how much you use them. Make two separate keychains and your life will be much more organized!
Tip Three: Install Keyless Entry
We’ve discussed keyless entry in the past. It is one of the best ways to simplify your life. When you install it in your home, you will eliminate a key from your keychain. How great is that? Removing your house key from the equation completely is great, because it is often the most-used key on your keychain.
